Spring is a sea­son of renew­al — a reminder that with the right sup­port, hope can grow even in the most chal­leng­ing moments. At Ken­neth Young Cen­ter (KYC), we meet peo­ple every day who are fac­ing over­whelm­ing hard­ships and sim­ply need some­one to walk beside them. 

Peo­ple like Sam and his son. 

Sam first came to KYC seek­ing ther­a­py for his child, who was strug­gling with low self-esteem and behav­ioral chal­lenges at school. Dur­ing those vis­its, Sam brave­ly shared that he, too, was car­ry­ing emo­tion­al bur­dens and began receiv­ing men­tal health support. 

With guid­ance from a KYC Behav­ioral Sup­port Spe­cial­ist, Sam worked to strength­en his par­ent­ing skills so he could bet­ter sup­port his son’s healing. 

Then, Sam’s world shift­ed. He lost his job — and with it, his housing. 

Unsure where to turn, Sam reached out to the KYC team that had already become a life­line. His Spe­cial­ist helped the fam­i­ly find tem­po­rary shel­ter and con­nect­ed Sam to solu­tions for man­ag­ing a seri­ous med­ical con­di­tion so he could stay safe and healthy dur­ing an incred­i­bly vul­ner­a­ble time. 

KYC’s com­mu­ni­ty-based teams coor­di­nat­ed wrap­around resources, ulti­mate­ly help­ing Sam and his son access tran­si­tion­al hous­ing and both social and men­tal health supports. 

Today, Sam’s son con­tin­ues to build con­fi­dence through ther­a­py and recent­ly took a major leap — try­ing out for the bas­ket­ball team — and proud­ly earned a spot. Sam is also con­tin­u­ing his own men­tal health jour­ney, know­ing he has a trust­ed team behind him.
