Motivational Interviewing Workshop
Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative, person-centered approach to help people explore and resolve ambivalence about change and growth.
This training, facilitated by a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), is highly interactive and experiential, with practice opportunities integrated throughout the training.
This training is approved for 6.5 CEU’s for LPC / LCPC / LSW / LCSW / MFT / LMFT CEUs pending from ICB.
Cameras must be on for the duration of the training to receive CEU credit.

Sarah Cameron
Sarah Cameron is a hearty and welcoming Midwesterner who's all about helping people transform their lives, one empowering partnered conversation at a time. As a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) and Tobacco Treatment Specialist, she's got a knack for guiding others toward their best selves. Sarah is a member of the prestigious Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). Think of her as a conversation ninja who helps people discover their own path to health behavior change – no directing or persuading required!
In 2024, Sarah launched Igniting Change Co, an LLC dedicated to training motivational interviewing. Now she's spreading her magic far and wide, training MI for social workers, MI for behavioral health teams, and MI for tobacco treatment specialists. She is a change catalyst in human form, helping professionals unlock their potential to make a real difference in people's lives.
By day, she has the privilege of working under 2 research psychologists in a busy downtown Minneapolis hospital, working alongside patients to help them make health behavior changes, and guiding other medical staff in honing in on their empathetic and empowering communication.
When Sarah's not training or helping people to change and grow, you'll find her thrift shopping, relaxing on a pontoon on one of Minnesota's many lakes, or listening to podcasts ranging from murder mysteries to gut biome to motivational interviewing musings.
Training Outline
01._ Introduction & Foundation
• What is Motivational Interviewing? Overview of MI as a collaborative, person-centered approach to helping people explore and resolve ambivalence about change and growth.
• Understanding ambivalence: Why people feel stuck between wanting to change and wanting to stay the same, and why that’s totally normal.
02._The Heart of MI
• The MI Spirit: What it means to practice with partnership, acceptance, compassion, and empowerment — and why this matters more than just learning techniques.
• Empathy vs. Sympathy: Understanding the difference and why empathy is your superpower in MI.
03_The MI Framework & Essential Skills
• The 4 Tasks of MI: Breaking down engaging, focusing, evoking, and planning as the roadmap for MI conversations.
• OARS Skills: Getting comfortable with Open questions, Affirmations, Reflections, and Summaries as your go-to tools.
04_Listening for Change Talk
• Change Talk and Sustain Talk: How to recognize when someone is talking themselves toward or away from change, and what to do with what you hear.
05_Other Advanced Skills & Tools
• Ask-Offer-Ask: A respectful way to share information and advice without killing the collaboration
• Importance and Confidence Scales: Using these simple tools to explore motivation and identify next steps
